Venture onto Plum Island

Located 17km off Toamasina, 45 minutes by boat, Plum Island is 2km long and 400 metres wide and is an ideal place for nature and adventure seekers.

Plum Island, also known as the 'Alagnagna Island', which means 'the beach', is home to the highest lighthouse in Africa at 66 metres, built in 1931. To enjoy a superb view of the Malagasy east coast and the Indian Ocean, ascend the spiral staircase of the lighthouse to the top.

The wonders of the island are countless. On the surface, the island is covered with dense forest and shelters some rare species. You will observe bats (Pteropus Rufus) called endemic bats, these creatures are also called flying foxes.

Venture onto Plum Island

Amateur and professional divers go to explore the seabed and appreciate the beauty of the landscapes of coral reefs. This ecosystem is a sanctuary for aquatic fauna.

You can also snorkel safely because the site is protected by a coral reef.

When to go

The tropical climate in Tamatave is characterised by significant rainfalls (3246 mm of annual average), even during dry periods. The average temperature is 24 °C. The weather conditions are more favourable for a stay between the months of August and November.

How to get there

For your transfer to Plum Island, you will embark on the side of the Club Nautique, next to the Port of Tamatave. Departure is scheduled at 7 am and return at 3:30 pm. You will be accompanied by a guide.

Where to eat

During your trip to Plum Island bring sandwiches and water. You can order your favourite dishes once in Tamatave. Take a table at the Longo Restaurant or at the Hotel Restaurant Labourdonnais. At La Veranda Tamatave Restaurant, the owners will do everything to satisfy your gourmet desires.

What to see

For a stroll through nature, the Ivoloina Park is only a few kilometres away from the city centre. To buy your travel souvenirs, nothing beats a trip to the Bazary Kely and Bazary Be markets.
