A quiet and peaceful escape destination, a historic place, this is the village of Mantasoa.

Located 68km from Antananarivo on the RN2 it takes 1h30 to 2 hours drive to Mantasoa, a destination that is renowned for its history.

Mantasoa retains the ruins of the first industrial city in Madagascar  created by the Frenchman, Jean Laborde, in the 19th century. He erected an industrial complex comprising a blast furnace, casting, glassware, soap, arms workshop and, also, a palace for Queen Ranavalona I. Jean Laborde forged the first cannon, muskets and Malagasy mortars at the request of the Queen.

During your stay in Mantasoa visit the house of Jean Laborde, now a museum. Jean Laborde's tomb, which he built and named 'Soamandrakizay' or 'everlasting happiness' is among the most visited sites in the locality.

The Mantasoa artificial lake, which is shaped like the fingers of a hand, is another attraction.

With an area of 2.000 Ha, this lake was created in 1936 for the regularization of the Ikopa river and the irrigation of the rice fields of the Betsimitatatra plain.

Today, the lake is a popular location for water sports (pedal boats, water skiing, and boat rides).
