Mother nature in all its splendour

 
Kelilalina which means "a small lake not deep enough", is a habitat for migratory birds located in the Ranomafana reserve in this southeastern part of Madagascar. Kelilalina, a tropical region, contains rare animal species including a bird commonly called "Toulou". Orchids with rich, flowery scents soothe minds. Three kilometres from the Ranomafana Nature Reserve lies Mahakajy, a well-known tourist spot for photographers and characterized by a spectacular waterfall that splashes over a large part of the reserve. As far as nature lovers are concerned, the botanical garden with typical plants of the region will meet all expectations.
 
Kelilalina is located 13km off Ranomafana National Park, in the heart of Ifanadiana district and Vatovavy Fitovinany region. It is a rural community which, thanks to its natural, material and human resources, constantly welcomes newcomers. Every Saturday, the place even becomes a cultural meeting place, where men and women in colourful dresses, reflecting their tribes, line the national road. The vast majority of the villagers are farmers and artisans. Bananas, beans and rice are among the staple crops. Palisander wood carvings, made from dead wood and scrap wood, are a local tradition.

When to go

Kelilalina is a tropical region. The best time to be there is between March and June.

How to get there

To reach the site by car, take the RN25 via Ranomafana Ifanadiana Park. On average, the journey takes 12 hours. Travellers land in Fianarantsoa by air and then have to complete the remaining 60km by car.

Where to stay

The best thing would be to have camping gear and sleep under the stars. Otherwise, in Ranomafana, some hotels are open all the year, including the Karibo Hotel, Setam Lodge, Centrest, as well as the Cristal Hotel.

Where to eat

Nothing beats the typical Malagasy dishes with local products served in the local restaurants. Seasonal fruit as well is sold at good prices. There is also the possibility of eating in the various restaurants of Ranomafana with their variety of delicious menus.

What to see

Nature in all its splendour. The place is a few kilometres from Ranomafana Park, so expect to cross paths with some exceptional animal and plant species. It is very likely to find "varika", "Toulou", "snakes". Also there are the different species of orchids and the Mahakajy waterfallsl that delight all visitors.
