The beautiful beaches, the turquoise sea or the immense forests have made the reputation of Madagascar. But there is more: the Big Island is rich in ancient monuments with incredible stories – which must be valued as tourist attractions! One of them is Farafaty, located east of the Big Island. A few kilometers from Tamatave, Farafaty is a splendid place, breathtaking. Surrounded by hills and marshes, the view is magnificent.
Farafaty is home to the largest "strong" merina of the Atsinanana region, built around 1883. This fort was a shelter for the Malagasy during the colonial era, where the military, to protect the coast against the attacks of the French and British colonists, installed their cannons.
This story can still be read in the remains of Farafaty. The site is one of the buildings that constitute the cultural wealth of the country. Despite the humid climate in the eastern region of the country, the stones of the fortress of Farafaty, have withstood any weather. Besides this rich past and a fascinating landscape, Farafaty is also a peaceful place where life is good. An ideal place to learn from the past, escape the noise of the city and go back in time.

When to go
The east of the Big Island has a humid climate. If you are not keen on drizzle, it is better to go there in the dry season.
How to get there
For starters, it will take an Air Madagascar flight to Ambalamanasy Toamasina airport. Once there, take a car, because Farafaty is about 7km from the capital of Betsimisaraka.

What to see
The culinary skills of the costal residents will render your trip unforgettable. They are able to concoct delicious little dishes based on local products such as fish or crabs. Another possibility is to return and eat in Toamasina.
