Take a Walk aside the Flamingos at Anony Lake

Leaving Fort-Dauphin towards Amboasary, the excursion to Anony Lake will lead you from the wet Anosy region to the drier Androy region to discover another particular vegetation.

 

Anony Lake, South of Amboasary and East of the former mouth of the Mandrare River is surrounded by arid areas. Today it is separated from the ocean by a string of dunes. This beautiful lake extends near the plantations of sisals. The area of the lake is 2300 hectares and the average depth of 5 to 6 m but can be up to 12 m during floods. It contains a high density of Rhizostoma jellyfish. The lake is fed by the river Itarantsa and communicates with the sea by a "Vinany" (mouth) which corresponds to a temporary opening in the rainy season only. Since the dunes separating the lake from the sea span about 600 m in width, the Vinany can remain closed for several years in succession, until a cyclone, a storm sufficiently violent, or an artificial rupture occurs and temporarily unclogs this barrier again.

 

Lake Anony, frequented during their season by the migratory flamingos that rest near the dunes between the sea and the lake, is beautiful: white sand beaches, lined with filao trees, canoes and fishing scenes in the brackish waters of the lake. The wind is conducive to windsurfing. Every morning between 10 am and 11 am, a steady thermal wind comes up, often lastsing until the end of the afternoon, which delights all sufers and sailors. It is possible to bivouac along the lake and practice windsurfing

or kitesurfing.
