ANDOVORANTO, port of Jean Laborde's Route

 
Andovoranto is on a small piece of land between the Pangalanes Canal and the Indian Ocean. A fishing village, the isolation of the latter allows it to be preserved from mass tourism. Its natural and cultural wealth is thus protected.
 
Andovoranto, or "Andovok'Iranto", means the "Iranto water hole". According to legend, Iranto, one of the first inhabitants of the place, he took his bath in a cavity filled with water situated in the district of Antanambaokely. Andovoranto is 14 km south of Ambila Lemaitso. Nestled on a strip of land between the Pangalanes Canal and the Indian Ocean, this fishing village is bound to the south by the mouth of the Rianila River that flows into the sea. The ruins still bear witness to the bubbling activity of this village. With road access, the Cocotiers ecolodge may be an interesting starting point in a circuit of the South Canal to Vatomandry and Mananjary or North to Manambato and Ankanin'nofy.
 
In the era of the kingdom of Imerina, Andovoranto was a commercial port, the mouth to the south of the village allowed the ships to enter the river and shelter there. The place was also a slave trade centre from where the name of Andevoranto remained until today. It was also one of the gateways kingdom of the highlands of Imerina. The foreign missionaries who disembarked there could not leave the village under the threat of death. The approval of the reigning sovereign is required to leave the village and access the kingdom of Imerina.

How to get there

By car: from Brickaville, take RN2 towards Toamasina and turn right (signpost, Ambila-Lemaitso hotel). 20 kms of track to Andovoranto, bush taxi or bush boat: round trip Brickaville / Andovoranto every morning except Sunday. For a well organised trip book at "Holidays Madagascar".
