Stargazing in Andoharanofotsy

 
It is only 15 kilometres north-west of the capital that, at nightfall, a unique adventure awaits you; observation of the map of the sky, in the heart of nature. Welcome to Ankadiefajoro Andoharanofotsy!
 
The private observatory "Astro" is located in the district of Atsimondrano, in the Analamanga region. This site, easily locatable thanks to its Hollywood-style inscription on the hill, is also known as "Domaine Mamilaza". Access is from fokontany Morarano Firaisana at the top of the hill. A short break to enjoy the rice field landscape, and the climb continues on a paved road to the observatory. At the top, the view of the city is breathtaking.
 
To rejoice, at 1300 metres high at a panoramic view, is not the only privilege offered by the Ankadiefajoro site. Learning stargazing, the observation of the stars by telescopes and the deep knowledge of the constellations and the solar system, (you can then call them by their pet names, "Scorpion", "Cancer", "Sagittarius" ... All these activities are on the agenda of the observatory.
 
Inaugurated in 2005, property of professor and astrophysicist Charles Ratsifaritana, the idea of this observatory at the top of the hill was to pay tribute to Albert Einstein, father of modern physics. Open to all, the place promotes the initiation to astronomy and the discovery of science and environmental issues. In December 2016, a pavilion was named after a great professor of nuclear science and technology and nanotechnology in Madagascar, Professor Raoelina Andriambololona, and last October, an educational laboratory was inaugurated within the site.

Useful Information

When to go

Astro Andoharanofotsy is open every day. It is advisable to make an appointment. To enjoy the best of celestial observation, a visit in the evening, from 19h is preferable.

How to get there

From the main road (RN7), take the right fork at Andoharanofotsy before arriving at Fokontany Morarano Firaisana. Follow the paved road to the hill. Perfect for mountain biking or for a hike.

Where to stay

Camping tent or bungalows around the site. Some hotels also including the "Trano Bongo hotel", the "Carat Ambatofotsy" or hotel "Espace Ravinala Amboajobe".

The Restaurant La Palmeraie Andoharanofotsy offers a warm welcome and awaits you with its specialities and gourmet buffets.

What to see

It is primarily a scientific excursion. But have no fear here, no complicated formulas or diagrams to interpret. The exhibitions are fun and accessible to all. However, visiting with a guide is always a plus. To relax after all these stars, a yoga garden awaits you.
