Hen Island or Nosy Akoho Island is in the natural harbour of Fénérive-Est. Visiting the island is a must with its magnificent view of the coastline from the open sea, beautiful beaches, the friendly fishermen, pirate legends and Betsimisaraka culture. .
Legend has it that an English pirate landed in Madagascar in the 1690s, had a relationship with Rahena, Queen Antavaratra of the time. From this relationship was born a child who would become the founding father of the Betsimisaraka ethnic group by bringing together the tribes of the east coast.
This king, son of pirate and mulatto, is none other than Ratsimilaho. Sources do not all agree on the same version of the story. Some say that the pirate and biological father of the king was Thomas Tew, English privateer-turned-pirate, who arrived here in 1693 and that the other pirate, who arrived around 1701, was an adoptive father.
Nosy Akoho shelters the tombs of Ratsimilaho and his nephews. It is a sacred place especially for descendants (zana-malata) which is a place of offering but also for visitors as it is said to grant wishes.
As for the origin of the name Nosy Akoho, Hen Island, the explanation is that, after studying in England, the King was enthroned and a ceremony was organised. A large quantity of chicken was cooked and a large pot, still full, disappeared, and then ended up in the Fénérive East prison

When to go
Analanjirofo is one of the rainiest areas of the Big Island. The climate is hot and humid.
How to get there
Fénérive is located 100km north of Toamasina. By taking a regular Air Madagascar flight from the capital, you have to take the national road N ° 5. Before the entrance of the city, next to the gendarmerie, turn right and follow the road that leads to the famous natural pool. The islet is in front of you!
Where to stay
Oasis Lodge and Sahorana Lodge are the best places to stay in Fénérive-Est. You can also enjoy discovering the east coast of Madagascar and spend the night in Mahambo at La Pirogue or Foulpointe,at Hotel Azura.
Where to eat
Try La Veranda or Le Kernel and taste the oriental specialities of the region.
What to see
A visit to the Lampy museum should be included in your itinerary. There are enormous cast iron pots in which royal feasts were prepared. Canoe rides are sometimes offered by fishermen; with a little luck, you will have the opportunity to see some lemurs. You can, also, shop for locally made baskets, hats and bags in the market.
