The nature reserve of Kalambatrita, with an area of 28.55 ha, has a unique rich wildlife with high bio-geographical value. Here, there are species from the south, the east and the high plateaus of the island.
This dense low altitude humid forest concentrates a high number of species considered to be critically endangered, including the Melanophylla alnifola, the Senecio kalambatritiensis, the Psychotria ivakoanyensis and the Psiadia dracaenifolia kalambatritiensis.
Among these precious inhabitants of the reserve are six species of lemurs: the Eulemur collaris, the Eulemur fulvus rufus, the Hapalemur griseus spp, the Hapalemur griseus griseus and the Lepilemur mustelinus, all considered as endangered. This very unique environment is also home to 72 species of birds, 68 percent of which are endemic to Madagascar and 16 percent are endemic to the region, and, last but not least, there are also 41 species of micro-mammals, two of the species listed as endangered by the IUCN.
The reserve is located 55 km to the east of Betroka, on the border between the regions of Ihorombe and Anosy. It is one of the richest areas of Madagascar in terms of species, with a rate of natural habitat for each altitude zone being close to 96 percent.
